Visby has the best preserved medieval city centre in the Baltic region. Even the city wall is intact. In summertime the medieval city is crowded the cafes and restaurant in every corner of the narrow streets.
The history of Visby
Visby's golden age was in the 12th and 13th century, when it became a major Hansa league town and an important centre for Baltic trade.
The town became bigger and more and more prosperous. During this time, the city wall was constructed. The town is swarmed by buildings and ruins from the early medieval period.
Later on, Visby faced a decline period. The positive side effect was that old houses and ruins was left until our days,
