In the northern part of lake Ladoga, you find a group of islands, the Valamo islands. They got their name from the orthodox monastery Valamo (rus Valaam) which have been here since the 14:th century.
The monastery is still here, but most of the work moved to Finland during the Finnish/Russian winter war 1940. Nowadays, the religious work is done also in the old monastery at Ladoga.
