Page 1 of 2 Of all Polish harbours, Swinoujscie and Ustka are the easiest to approach. Ustka is situated in the center of the Polish coast, at the estuary of river Slupia. To Swinoujscie it is 100 M, to Gdynia 90 M and to Bornholm, Denmark only 65 M.
Approaching
The 41 meters wide inlet leads to the outer harbour. Clearance is done at the newly renovated Captains house - a building with red saddle roof. The harbour master can be contacted at VHF ch 12. A weather forecast is sent at 07.00, 12.30, 18.30 and 23.00 local time. Slupsk Radio also broadcast information about the nearby military practice area, sometimes closed for sailing.
The lighthouse is lit in periods of 6 sec and has a range of 18 M. Steer towards the chimneys and a church tower, higher than the lighthouse. The leading line at 140 ° leads towards th lighthouse and the harbour inlet.
The port can be difficult to approach in harsh weather with W, N or E winds. In such weater, overfalls are formed. Approaching in winds up to 4-5 B (up to 11 m/s) is sucure, and in stronger winds you have to use both sail and engine to pass the inlet . The picture shows overfalls at the inlet in 7-8 B. In strong winds approaching can be dangerous!
As in most Polish harbours, there are sometimes currents parallel to the shore with a speed up to 3 knots.
