Sõru is a little harbor on the SW tip of Hiuumaa, at the narrow and shallow inlet between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa. (The Sõru strait)
The harbour is situated West of the most narrow passage, and can be approached from the sea in west in calm weather. In the strait currents of 4 knots can occur when there are strong winds from E or W.
The passage is a regular fairway with bouys and is used by the ferry sailing between the islands.
Despite the navigational difficulties, Söru is good alternative to approach the West-Estonian archipelago. From Stockholm archipelago in Sweden, this route is significant shorter than the alternatives to go around Hiiumaa on the northern side to Lethma, or to approach Kuressaare via the Riga Bay.
THere is an alternative harbour close to Sõre, which can be called in bad weather. Veere, down in Tagalht bay on NW Saaremaa can be approached both in darkness and bad weather.
Approach from West
Steer, using a GPS to the Sõru fairway landfall buoy. Continue along the fairway 89,4° and turn in on the new SE fairway leg to SE (130,6°). Don not take a shortcut into the harbour. Wait until the harbour has opened itself on the port side Go south of the red fairway buoy.
Approach from East
Follow the fairway until the harbour opens up in North. Steer in.
Service
The harbour has gone through a overhaul and can offer a lot of service to sailors. In the close-by village you find a shop.
