Page 1 of 2 Osmussaar (swe. Odenholm, or "Woden's islet") is a small island outside Dirhami in NW Estonia. It was a part of the Swedish settlement. Here lived a Swedish speaking population until WWII. The island was evacuated in 1940, and later it became a battle zone.
The island is a nature reserve today. It is famous for it's birdlife and also find a lot of orchids. There are still military remnants left behind by Germans and Russians.
It is absolutely a good idea to bring a packed lunch and walk to the lighthouse at the N. coast. There is a fine beach towards the Gulf of Finland. You can also swim in the biggest fresh water lake. The water there is some degrees warmer than the sea. The islands also offers a toilet and a tenting area.
