Saaremaa is the largest island in the West-Estonian archipelago. In SW you find the elongated Sörve peninsula, with the lighthouse carrying the same name as the peninsula.
Mõntu is a small harbour at the SE part of the peninsula. A ferry line betweeen Saaremaa and Ventspils departs from Mõntu.
Approaching from west
If you approach Saaremaa from west, notice that the whole west coast towards the Baltic Sea is shallow shoals, rocks and other difficulties. There is a port of entry at Veere in the deep Tagalaht Bay at the NW Saaremaa. Another choice is to head directly for a port at Kuressaare. Mõntu is an alternative at shorter distance.
Sörve peninsula There are a lot of shallows on every side of the Sörve peninsula. Then you enter The Bay of Riga you have to hold well out from the coast. The peninsula is well worth a visit, from Mõntu, or "from ashore" by car starting at Kuressaare. The nature is barren with a lot of junipers and herbs. The coast is low, the stony beaches outside the "juniper belt" are dominated by limestone, in some places in the form off coastal cliffs.
Far out, at the southern point, stands the large coastal lighthouse "Sörve". From here you can see the Latvian coast.
The port
Mõntu is an old naval port, originally constructed by the Germans during the 1st world war. It became used for military purposes into Soviet time. It is situated, in total isolation from any settlements, at the SE part of Sörve peninsula. The piers give protection for all winds, maybe except from SE. It is partly used as a Fishing harbour, and a new Fishing factory has been built close to the harbour.
Mõntu has a strategic location when approaching from Ventspils or Gotland.
Toilets is found in the Fishing factory. Electricity and water is found in the harbour.
