A small town with big ships. Mariehamn is civilization, excellent food and service. It's a good port
to call after days of stormy and rainy weather and when the boat feels
too small. But don't stay too long. The money disappears quickly when
you have a good time!
West och East harbour
In Mariehamn you find yacht harbours both at the western and eastern side. We want to recommend the yacht harbour of Mariehamn sailing society at the eastern side of the town. Here you will not be disturbed by huge ferries, and you can berth close to the small town centre with all it's restaurants..
Mariehamn has an interesting historie as a world centre for big sailing ships during the their very last period for commersial shipping. In West harbour you find the huge Sailing ship Pommern.
ApproachingComing from Sea of Åland, low bridges and causeways force you to choose which harbour to call, already at sea. You approach the eastern harbour by heading for the south of lighthouse Nyhamn or by sailing from the excellent haven Rödhamn. Next, an archipelago fairway leads northwards to the eastern harbour of Mariehamn. The western harbour can be called directly from the sea.
There is an Åland outside Mariehamn too. By boat you have an excellent opportunity to explore it. But Mariehamn is a good choise as a starting or ending point for a voyage around the Åland archipelago.
