Liepaja is the southernmost of the Latvian ports. You find the city situated between a lake and the Baltic Sea. Either the city or the port are particularly large.

Street
in Liepaja by M.H.,on FlickrHere, time has really stopped. The central parts of town are dominated by old lesser stone and wooden houses. The streets are often stone pawed.

It feels like being thrown back to the 30th. The buildings are often worn by time, and it will take many years to restore the city. But if one can find money and patience to repair, instead of erase the older buildings,  Liepaja could be a real tourist magnet.

Approaching

The approach to Liepaja is simple. The port is guarded by a huge half-circle formed pier. In the pier you find gates in different directions. Look out for buoys in the middle of the gates!

The guest harbour

Inside the pier, you steer SE towards the S. base of the pier. There you find the inlet to the river. Follow the river upstream to "the end", at the townbridge.

On the starboard side you find some places prepared for yachts. You are now in the center of the town.

Near the quay you find showers and WC's in the basement of a nearby building. The guest harbour is guarded day and night. We didn't experience any security problems. ELLENnet EOF sign

The three harbour entrances are all usably. At the end of the south entrance at the starboard side of the canal. The last part from the quay is in disarray. Rusty iron is pouring out of the wall.

This was the only place so far from coming from the Netherlands of having our passports ready.

The Russian quarter in the north gives an special view on the Russian quarter today. Flats without wood in the windows. The cathedral inaugurated by Nicholas 11 is worth as an contrast to these flats. Take the bus.
