Leba is a small village with fishing harbour at the river estuary. It is situated nearby Slowinski national park, an area with mighty sand dunes, Poland's answer on Sahara!
Approaching
Like other Pomeranian river ports, Leba can be hard to approach in harsh weather with strong winds from north. The outgoing river current collides with the sea, and very huge waves can form outside the river estuary. In order to make the approach safer in bad weather, the sea piers were reconstructed some yeras ago. Before this reconstruction the approach was said to be unsafe if the wind exceeded 11 m/s.
The river itself is safe. In summer many tourist crafts with passengers goes into and out from the harbour. Since the river is very narrow you shod approach with care. The port control can be called upon by VHF for instructions. The fishing harbour, and the new yachts harbour are situated along the river.
The village
At Leba you now find a new Marina with berth for 130 yachts. The smalls village awakes in summer. Close by you find Slowinski National Park, and also fine beaches.
Slowinski National park
The national park is situated west of Leba. It is famous for it's mighty sand dunes, but there are also nice lakes in the nature reserve. During the Second World War the dunes were a training ground for the Africa Corps before its deployment in Africa. The Germans also tested their V1 and V2 rockets here. You can still see the ruins of their shooting range facilities and launching pads
Left from the war are also a network of paved narrow roads, nowadays used by "mini trains", golf cars and horse carriages. Yet another way to see the park is to take the small passenger craft on the lake from Leba town.
