Saaremaa (swe. Ösel) is the largest island in the West-Estonian archipelago. Kuressaare is situated at the south side of the island.
Approaching from West
There are a lot of shallows, both south of the lighthouse of Riga Bay, and outside the eastern coast, towards Kuressaare. Then you enter The Bay of Riga you have to keep well out from the coast. Later, you avoid the dangers by steering toward isl. Abruka.
The city
Kuressaare is the main city on Hiiumaa. It is dominated by the old Bishop's castle, now a museum. There are many older picturesque hoses in the city centre.
The yacht clubs
In recent years major improvements have been achieved for boat tourism in Kuressaare. There are now a choice of three yacht harbours, all with good service.
