The construction of naval base Kronstadt on island Kotlin began at the time of the
founding of St Petersburg in the 18th century. Kronstadt was a part of
the defence of the new Russian capital.
Since the foundation of the city and the naval base by Peter the great, it has worked as a lock for the city.
The island Kotlin is nowadays linked to the mainland with a 14 km long road bank. Only the fairway south of isl. Kotlin is navigable.
Approaching
Approach St.Petersburg, the largest city in the Baltic, via the fairway south of Kotlin.
Plan your arrival, so that you pass Kronstadt in the morning, and can continue the last leg into St Petersburg in daylight.
The border control post was recently located immediately after the dike between Kotlin and the mainland in south, at the north side of the fairway (fort Konstantin). In 2008, you have to sail on, into St Petersburg proper, and call the ferry terminal "Morskoy Voksal". You can not stop at Kronstadt.
