In the southeast end of Åland archipelago, you find the Kökar island group. The location is remote and it is far away from mainland Åland.
The landscape is very special, reminding of an outer skerries in gigantic format. The high islands at distance, first looks like tiny skerries in the outer archipelago. When you come closer you discover the huge size of everything.
In the inner, protected parts of Kökar, there are booth sheep and agriculture.
Approaching
Kökar can be approached from any of the fairways surrounding the islands. You can also approach directly from the sea in south, via Kökarsören. A yachting fairway is passing south of the main island with approaches both from W. and E.
More on Kökar
There are several harbours and havens at Kökar. The church in NW is worth a visit. However in NW. there is no harbour. Instead, there is a choice between Hellsö in NE and Karlby in S. At Hellsö you find restaurant "Havspaviljongen" with a stunning view on the archipelago.
In Karlby you find a protected harbour at a restaurant and hotel jetty. At Karlby you find a shop, fuel, bank and other service. Karlby's main asset is the windling yachting fairway, approaching from south.
It is a stunning experience to sail through the wild outer archipelago with it's gigantic rocks, step by step reaching more protected waters. At Karlby you meet a pastoral rural landscape and a very nice jetty.
