In northern lake Onega you find Kizhi island, famous for it's wooden churches and outdoor museum. For centuries wooden architecture has been an important part of the Russian culture. At Kizhi you can see some of the most complex wooden structures ever erected. Most famous of all is the church of Transfiguration with 22 domes. It is all built in wood without using a single nail or other metal part. Completed in 1714, it's one of the most remarkable examples of the skills of Russian craftsmen.
