Kihnu
harbour after reconstruction by deaoja, on FlickrOutside Gulf of Pärnu, in NW, you find the island Kihnu (swe. Kynö). It has a reputation being idyllic and old fashioned. In fact it is a living museum.

Approaching

Kihnu is surrounded by huge shallows. They are notorious and approach must be done at safe distance. Approach from east. A leading line shows the way into harbour.

The harbour

The harbour looks open from E. but the shallows work like breakwaters, making the port better than it looks at first sight. The quays have been restored recently.

The village and the island

pulm by tahetydruk, on FlickrEven if not everyone use traditional clothing in everyday life, the island is indeed very old fashioned. It has the right size for a day trip by bike. The nature is special. The lack of wood has made people harvest under-vegetation, transforming the forest into a park like style.

There are four villages at the island. The distance from the harbour to the island centre is about two kilometres. There you will find a café, shops and bikes for rent. Kihnu also has a church and a museum. ELLENnet EOF sign
