In the NW part of Bay of Lumparn, you can pass through the Slottsundet (Castle strait). The open waters becomes narrow, and in the innermost part of the sound, you find Kastelholm castle, and a jetty just below the castle itself.
The castleKastelholm is the only medieval castle on Åland. The exact time of its construction is not known, but it appears in written documents from the 14:th century. Under medieval times and to the 17:th century, this was the administrative center of Åland. Later on the castle declined, and in the end a fire ravaged it in 1745. The castle is partly renovated today, and in the well kept parts, you find a museum. Other parts of the castle is mostly a ruin.
