Königsberg cathedral © ML&MBKaliningrad, the old East Prussian capital Königsberg, was almost totally destroyed during the World War II. Present Kaliningrad is to a large extent a Soviet new construction. It is a big, busy city with Russian inhabitants.

Kaliningrad lacks Russian history, and from the Prussian one is not much left. The German history make it's influence known, mostly by the Königsberg Cathedral ruin, now have been restored.

Soviet history

Instead of being a memorial on German history, today's Kaliningrad is a museum on Soviet history. Statues an memorial's cleaned away in other parts of Russia are still present here. The streets have there old Soviet names.

If you want to feel the winds of history, Kaliningrad is the right place.

The city is in many ways connected to the large naval base at Baltiysk. It is noticeable in the city. The dependence on military investments became a disadvantage then Soviet union disintegrated.

Having survived the Yeltsin era problems, the city now will face the problems with the EU enlargement. As a small isolated Russian territory surrounded by EU members, it could face isolation. But it can also emerge as Russian window to the west.

The lowland

Close to the big city, you find Kaliningradskij Saliv. It is the eastern corner of the Baltic Sea. The water is shallow and the land is low. You can't even trust the charts. This is a river delta and sand drift and water flow moves the shallow shores.

You find very few buildings passing the 20 Nm between the naval base and Kaliningrad itself. Close to the naval base, with it's modern warships we meet people bathing. Suddenly we meet a cargo ship. One of those coffins there only rust holds the metal plates together. It is common that ships are in this shape.

Approaching

From Baltiysk you follow the Sea Canal by engine. The voyage continues out on Kaliningradskiy Saliv. The waters are shallow but navigable

The marina

The conditions in the harbours are very simple, but you can get help with essentials. The harbours are situated in the eastern part of Kaliningradskiy Saliv. Yachts with to draught >2,0 m. should not sail in the gulf. Instead berthing can be arranged in Kaliningrad city harbour at the end of the Sea Canal "Morskoy Kanal".

It is definitely an area with few visiting western yachts. Since "tourist" are few, you will be met with friendliness and curiosity. If you have "your ways around", it's worth the trouble to get a visa and an a letter of invitation. Kaliningrad will be an experience of a lifetime!

The final approach is marked with buoys. There is also a leading line ashore. There are a water and toilet, but no shower. Electricity connection ashore possible. The harbour can help with refueling, sail repair and yacht equipment. ELLENnet EOF sign
