North of Bay of Gdansk, a long peninsula stretches out from the west. At the south side of the point, you find Hel. It not like hel at all! Instead you find a fishing harbour, and a resort, reached by a ferry from Gdansk in south.
There are a lot of small shops and tavernas in the village.
Close, west of the fishing harbour, is a naval base situated. Avoid to enter the base! The polish navy have some proud traditions here. Hel was Polish even between the wars. As a part of "the Polish corridor" it was one of Poland's few contacts with the sea. From Hel embarked what Poland had of Navy, when the war broke out. They fought a proud, but hopeless fight against more modern vessels and enemy air dominance. Hel has now a small navy museum.
Approaching
Outside the point in E. and S., the water is shallow. If you come, like us, in the middle of the night you can feel a bit insecure. On the point stands a lighthouse. From the south side you se a light buoy (a south buoy) marking the edge of the shallow banks. From SW you have no problem approaching the harbour.
Hel is a port of entry, and you can visit the authorities if you are coming from, or are sailing to Russia. It is possible to contact them on VHF Radio Gdynia.
