Hanko (swe. Hangö) is located at the Southwestern cape of mainland Finland.
Due it's location, Hanko has had strategic and military significance through history. Here the shallow archipelago waters meets the deep sea.
Isl. Gäddtarmen in SW has been significant for shipping through history. On the cliffs, you find inscriptions from seafarers dating from the 16th century and onwards.
During the winter war (WWII), Finland was forced to accept a Russian naval base at Hanko. It was the site of fighting during the continuation war. A museum is found at the fortifications.
Approaching
Approaching is simple. Many fairways leads into harbour.
Marinas
There are several marinas and ports at Hanko. In south are situated:
- Outer harbour and Western harbour are ports for commercial shipping.
- Eastern harbour is the biggest guest harbour.
- Baltic port guest harbour is situated on an island outside Eastern harbour. It has ferry connection with the mainland.
There are two guest harbours on the north side:
- Kapellhamnen (Chapel harbour)
- Hanko village
Beside the ports, you can visit isl. Tullholm ("Gäddtarmen"). THere is a jetty at the NE side of the island, which can be called for short visits.
The village
Hank is an important centre for yachting tourism. In the village you find all kind of services.
