Gdansk (ger. Danzig) is a 1000 year old Hansa town with an exciting history. The old city center was destroyed during world war II, but the Polish built it up again.
Approaching
You approach the town via Nowy Port, the inlet of Martwa Wisla. Martwa Wisla ("Dead Wisla") is the old estuary of river Wisla, The main arm now flows to another estuary into the Baltic Sea. For this reason "Dead Wisla" have no current.
Gdansk Marina
Opposite the Old Town and the famous "Old Crane", you find, the brand new Gdansk Marina, which was opened summer -97. The Marina has western standard.Despite it's location close to the streets of Old town, the harbour itself is a peaceful place.
The city
Gdansk (ger. Danzig) has a thousand year history. It was for long time an important Hansa town and a stronghold for the German Knights. Later, it became a part of Prussia. After world war I, Poland gain contact through "the Polish corridor" west of Danzig. The town itself became independent under the League of Nations.
Here was the first shots fired during world war II and here was also the free trade union "Solidarnost" founded at the Lenin Wharf. The city has a rich history, and at 1997 the city celebrated it's 1000 years anniversary.
