The fortress
Åland was conquered, from Sweden in 1809, together with the rest of Finland. Åland's new Russian masters began in 1830:s to construct the fortress of Bomarsund to protect the new province. In line with the military doctrine of the time. a huge fortress was built in the center of the land. The result was a powerful fortification, supposed to be able to support all of Åland.
In the Crimean war (1854) a British-French fleet attacked the fortress, and succeeded to conquer it. Before leaving, they blow up the whole fortress. In the following peace treaty Åland became a demilitarized zone, and the fortress was never erected again.
Today, only a few remnants remains of the ones so mighty fort. However history is present at this place of Åland's lat military battle. The ruins as such are not so much to see, but is a nice stop, passing by.
